IFMA Meets: From Cost Center to Value Driver: How Objective-Based Maintenance Is Transforming Maintenance

IFMA Meets: From Cost Center to Value Driver: How Objective-Based Maintenance Is Transforming Maintenance

Many companies today are caught between preventive and predictive maintenance. While more and more data on assets, conditions, and operational processes is becoming available, there is often a lack of alignment with strategic business goals. At the same time, organizations face increasing demands to ensure the reliable availability of critical equipment, achieve ESG goals, and optimize costs in a sustainable manner.

Objective-Based Maintenance (OBM) addresses precisely this issue. Instead of scheduling maintenance activities solely based on fixed intervals or technical conditions, they are specifically aligned with defined business objectives. Whether it’s the availability of critical assets, risk minimization, sustainability, or cost-effectiveness, maintenance becomes a strategic tool that demonstrably contributes to a company’s success. Although the technological prerequisites are often in place today, this approach is still in an early stage of development in many organizations.

Using real-world examples, this presentation highlights the opportunities and challenges involved in the transition from traditional maintenance strategies to objective-based maintenance. It covers the full range of requirements, from defining appropriate objectives to utilizing available data and measuring success. In addition, it highlights the organizational and technological prerequisites necessary for the successful implementation of Objective-Based Maintenance and explains how this approach can contribute to long-term value creation.
